Five Burglaries in Albany, New York

Five Burglaries in Albany, New York

Scenario One

There have been five burglaries reported since late July throughout the city, and, in most cases, a suspect entered a home in the early morning hours and stole items from female residents.
There is no indication that all five break-ins, which were widespread, are connected to one suspect, police spokesman Albany Detective James Miller said. Even though these burglaries don't seem to be related, it is a good indication that we need to take measures to protect ourselves in our homes.
Two of the five incidents occurred this week, both involving the residences of University at Albany students. victim awoke to see him performing a lewd act next to her bed. She kicked him, and he put and he put a knife to her face and warned her not to scream. He then grabbed her purse and fled, Miller said.
  • On Wednesday, a man entered a home by unknown means, and the a knife to her face and warned her not to scream. He then grabbed her purse and fled.
  • On Friday, a man entered a home through an unlocked door and stole money from a victim's purse.
  • On Aug. 19, a man climbed through a window and stole the victim's purse. The victim was touched by the intruder but unharmed.
  • Earlier last month, Aug. 4, a man entered a home through an unlocked door and apparently nothing was taken.
  • On July 23, an intruder entered a home through a window. Nothing was taken.
Community service officers are working with neighborhood associations and local colleges in the areas where the break-ins occurred to keep residents informed, Miller said, adding, "everyone should always practice crime prevention in and out of their homes."
"Keeping your doors locked and windows shut and locked at all times can help deter anyone from entering your home," he said. "Exterior lights should be kept on at night and you should call police if you think there is anything suspicious in your neighborhood."

Scenario Two

Don't have a Ferocious Barking Dog?

Electronic Barking Dog that will work just fine. True story. There was a local break in recently. The woman locked herself in her bedroom and turned on her Electronic Barking Dog and scared the intruder away. This story would have had a far different ending if she had not been prepared. When I heard this on the news, I thought this was one smart lady. She took the time to look for self defense products, find one she was comfortable with, and more importantly, took action.

These kinds of break ins are happening all across our country, in both small towns and large cities. By all means, it is important to keep your doors locked and your windows shut and locked at all times. But we need to go one step further to empower ourselves against harm.

LIke it or not, here are the facts:

The Crime Clock, based on 2009 crime data, conveys the annual reported crime by showing relative frequency of occurrence of the Index Offenses. The Crime Clock represents the annual ratio of crime to fixed time intervals.
  • One major crime reported every 31 minutes
  • One violent crime reported every 5 hours
  • One homicide every 20 days
  • One forcible rape every 5 days
  • One robbery every 9 hours
  • One aggravated assault every 9 hours
  • One property crime reported every 34 minutes
  • One burglary every 2 hours
  • One larceny every 54 minutes
  • One auto theft every 11 hours
Which Scenario would you rather have happen to you? As for me, I would prefer Scenario Two. There are many ways to protect ourselves in our homes. Everything from Pepper Sprays to Stun Guns. Pepper Sprays prices start for under $10.00. Stun guns start at under $25.00. By the way, the Barking Dog Alarm costs $99.00. So why not make an investment in your family's safety. It's kind of like an insurance policy. It's there when you need it.
